Exploring nearby petting zoos is a great way to create lasting memories with your loved ones. Here’s a list of some fantastic petting zoos within an hour’s drive of Boston, perfect for family outings.
1. Stone Zoo—Stoneham
Stone Zoo, though small, is packed with exciting exhibits. Highlights include flamingos, Mexican gray wolves, and gorillas. Kids especially love feeding the goats, which is always a hit. The zoo also features a charming carousel.

Admission: Adults $20, Children $16.
Family memberships ($125) are available, covering admission for 2 named adults and up to 4 children, with a family plus option that includes 2 additional guests. All memberships include free admission to Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo for one full year.
2. Franklin Park Zoo—Boston
Franklin Park Zoo is a family favorite, especially for kids. Home to over 220 species, including western lowland gorillas, red pandas, giraffes, and kangaroos, there’s always something new to see. The big playground areas for the kids are also attractive. During the summer, don’t miss the butterfly garden. The zoo also hosts special events like Boston Lights and Halloween exhibitions. The Boston Light exhibition will be available from August 2 – November 3 (Closed August 24)

3. New England Aquarium—Boston
The New England Aquarium is highly accessible for strollers and offers a perfect blend of entertainment and education, making it a great destination for families. It provides an engaging and informative experience for visitors of all ages. Children can interact with various marine creatures, like starfish and small sharks, making marine biology enjoyable and interactive. Adults will find the comprehensive exhibits exploring marine ecosystems and conservation efforts both fascinating and enlightening.

4. Southwick’s Zoo—Mendon
With 850 exotic animals from around the globe, Southwick’s Zoo features a diverse range of wildlife, including peacocks, deer, lions, tigers, sloths, white rhinos, and capybaras. It offers unique and thrilling experiences. The 35-acre deer forest lets visitors closely interact with and feed the deer. For an extra adrenaline rush, try the Soaring Eagle Zipline. The zoo also offers snacks and ice cream for purchase, but keep in mind that pets are not permitted in the deer forest.

Hours: Open from April to October, with more activities in the summer. Operating hours are 10 AM – 5 PM
